The BS* + Beer Show: Pretty Good House Book Launch

The authors, editor, and contributors describe what publishing this book entailed and the mission behind their efforts

This episode of The BS* + Beer Show celebrates the launch of The Pretty Good House book. As copies make their way into more and more hands, it’s exciting to hear from the authors, the editor, and some contributors about what went into producing the book and the philosophy behind it. We hear about the genesis of the PGH concept and the motivation for gathering all this content together in one place. The conversation covers a lot of ground—from the feasibility and attainability of green building credentials (and the contrasting ease of building a Pretty Good House) to the pressing timeline of the climate crisis and its impact on the building industry to PGH affordability and practicality. To quote author Chris Briley, “There’s something in it for everyone.”

Enjoy the show!

The BS* + Beer Show schedule

Episodes air the first Thursday of the month. The next show is on September 1, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m. ET, when we will host Doug Horgan and Randy Williams. They’ll discuss common “construction deficiencies” they see in the course of their work and the strategies they use for rectifying them. Air leakage, insufficient insulation, and bulk water issues are among the topics to be covered.

Doug Horgan is vice president of Best Practices at BOWA, the Washington DC area’s premier custom and remodeling builder. In this training, quality monitoring, and troubleshooting role, Doug’s goal is to reduce construction defects through knowledge sharing. Doug’s 30 years of experience in the fields of carpentry, warranty-troubleshooting, and instruction, along with thousands of photos taken along the way, are the foundation for visually rich presentations on how to build well and avoid construction problems. Doug is a frequent contributor to the “Journal of Light Construction,” “ProTradeCraft,” “Fine Homebuilding,” “Remodeling,” and “Professional Remodeler,” and he has presented at Remodeling, JLC Live, NESEA Building Energy, the National Home Performance conference, and local events. His credentials include BPI Building Analyst and LEED AP – Homes.

Randy Williams has been in the construction industry for 25 years, 10 of which were spent working as an electrician. He still holds a journeyman electrician license. In 2009, he moved away from general contracting into a career as an energy auditor. Today, in addition to conducting energy assessments, he does some building science and energy design work, and keeps a hand in the carpentry field as a subcontractor and occasionally as a consultant.
